The City of Bristol Museum is justifiably proud of its superb collection of Chinese glass, comprising some 300 items and one of the most significant of its kind outside Asia - and specialist cabinets from Lista now play their part in both protection and access.
Also of note, the Museum was delighted to receive a major grant form the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council ( MLA ) to assist in research, conservation and storage relating to the glass, as well as creating a website featuring all the objects for a worldwide audience.
The Lista system is based on their Bergneustadt cabinet range - reflecting the quality Swiss origin - and features numerous key benefits including large visual display panels, dust sealing and non-contaminating paint throughout the sturdy steel construction.
Finished in modern, tasteful white the three visual cabinets are complemented above by sliding door versions for more varied and larger items. The lower cabinets are fitted with adaptable shelves to accommodate the likes of vases and bowls, whilst pull-out drawers house the smaller objects such as personal jewellery and snuff bottles.
This clever concept of "open storage" maintains a secure environment for the precious display whilst at the same time allowing everything to be easily observed and identified.
Curator Kate Newnham is very pleased with her new storage system. "Once we had received the MLA grant we checked each supplier and we were impressed by Lista’s expertise and attention, especially as they had to fit the system into a rather awkward area. We had previously had to get by with our own wooden in - house units, and the beauty of these cabinets is that this delicate collection can be maintained within an ideal environment, whilst being accessible for researchers and other visitors".
